Professional Bio

My name is Scott Hampton, and I’m a professional woodturner, demonstrator, educator, and mentor from Visalia, California, in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, near Sequoia National Park. For more than 15 years, I’ve made it my mission to share the art and craft of woodturning with enthusiasts across the United States and internationally.
My woodturning journey began in 1999 when I attended a local woodworking store’s open house and watched Jim Mathias demonstrate the possibilities of woodturning. Inspired by what I saw, I attended my first Sequoia Woodturners meeting just two weeks later. I started by volunteering and eventually served the chapter as videographer for 17 years, newsletter editor for nine years, secretary for two years, and president for two years. Today, I’m a former president and current vice president of the Kern Woodturners in Bakersfield, California.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside and learning from more than 30 of the world’s most respected woodturners. Those friendships and experiences have shaped my own approach to the craft and helped me develop presentations that combine practical techniques, creative inspiration, and an enjoyable learning experience.
My demonstrations and teaching engagements include the 2022 American Association of Woodturners Symposium, the 2022 SoCal Turners Expo, and the 2023 and 2024 SWAT Symposia, along with club demonstrations, workshops, and live online classes.
Whether I’m teaching in person or online, my goal is to help woodturners of all skill levels build confidence, explore new techniques, discover their own creative style, and find greater enjoyment in the craft. I believe there’s always something new to learn, and I look forward to sharing ideas, inspiration, and making shavings together.
