Welcome to the Young Turners Program - designed to encourage and aid local AAW chapters working with youth. We want to see the development of youth programs, giving back to communities in which our chapters reside. Participation may include supplementing scholastic educations, aiding development of well-rounded individuals, or simply the enjoyment of sharing with others. Whatever the reasoning, just remember: HAVE FUN!
May 9, 2010: Announcing the latest program in our continuing history of outreach to youth. Our Journals for Turners and Learners program will support educational programming benefiting youth and nonprofit schools. A local chapter with a youth program or a nonprofit school can request a box of American Woodturner journals once a year for use in their educational programs. There is timeless information about woodturning including projects and techniques. Each box will contain approximately 30 journals from our supply of back issues. If a number of older issues are included, the number may be higher because the journals have fewer pages and more copies can be included. The value of the journals is approximately $200 and the only cost to participate in the program will be $15 to cover shipping and handling. These journals can be used for projects or as inspiration. The goal is to create a passion for woodturning among youth. Please contact the AAW office in St Paul if your chapter would like to participate.
SAFETY FIRST... Begin every class with a safety lesson. Provide face shields. Be especially attentive to long hair, cords, jewelry and long sleeves. Refer to: http://woodturner.org/resources/safety.htm
The Young Turners Program is implemented in two phases. Phase One involves either turning two tops or a honey dipper. At the end of this turning session, the young turners will receive their Woodturning Student completion certificate. Each chapter will invite the young turners to subsequent youth chapter events for Phase Two. To complete this phase, the young turners are required to turn four projects from a larger list. At the completion of Phase Two, the young turner receives their Woodturning Journeyman completion certificate along with a complimentary one year AAW membership.
Each chapter might also consider sponsoring their local membership and possibly their AAW membership outside of Phase Two awards.
The AAW Young Turners Program is web-based, allowing each chapter to access and print required materials as needed. Project outlines, certificates, and the Phase Two membership application are available in PDF format for download and printing. Chapters should be familiar with each project, using the outlines provided as guidelines and teaching aids.
Read the winter 2006 issue of American Woodturner for excellent examples of chapter youth programs. Whether you work with a local school, scout troop, or have a public event, have fun with the kids. We want to here about your chapter program. Send us an email with summaries, completed project photos and group photos for possible inclusion in American Woodturner.
