Best AAW Chapter Newsletter Contest

Judging of this year's best chapter newsletter contest was made by AAW Board members Jean LeGwin and Dale Larson - After much deliberation and consideration, we have chosen the following as the winners for the best AAW newsletter contest for 2009:

Rules for 2009 Chapter Contests

Best AAW Chapter Newsletter Contest

Please send contest questions to the Chapters and Membership Chairman, Dale Larson: dale_l@woodturner.org. Put "2009 Newsletter Contest question" in subject line of your email.

A) Contest submissions:

  • Local Chapters newsletter editors or Chapter officers must submit their newsletters for the competition.
  • Chapters who wish to enter their newsletter in this year's competition must do so by email. Postal Service (snail-mail) entries will not be accepted.
  • To enter, send email to: dale_l@woodturner.org
  • Please put "Entry for Newsletter Contest" in the subject line of your email.
  • Include the following minimum information with your email submission: either send four links to four different online issues of your Chapter newsletters, or attach four different newsletter pdf files to your email submission. The four different newsletter issues must be from the date range shown in "Eligibility" below. Include your Chapter's name, newsletter editor's name and contact information.
  • You will receive an email verification that the submission was received. If you do not receive the email verification, please re-send your initial email or send a query to Dale Larson.

B) Evaluation Process

Three Chapters will be chosen as winners (first, second, third) based on numerical ranking from the judging criteria listed below. Judging for the 2009 contest will be done by Jean LeGwin, Publications Chairwoman of the AAW Board, assisted by Dale Larson.

C) Eligibility

  • Newsletters must be published between March 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009
  • The Chapter must be registered as an AAW Chapter with the St Paul office
  • Email submissions must be made by March 31, 2008

D) Prizes

  • Winners will be announced by June 1, 2009. Announcements will be made through:
    - the AAW website and forum
    - the American Woodturner
    - and recognized at the 2009 Symposium
  • Winning Chapters will receive a plaque commemorating their achievement.

E) Judging Criteria and Process:

  • The judging criteria are listed below
    - Numerical values from 1-10 will be assigned to each category
    - Each category receives equal weight
    - An average of the category scores determines final ranking
    - The judge’s decision is final
  • Layout/Graphic Design: Visually appealing, easy to read
  • Up-to-date, Current Content: New info easy to find
  • Uniqueness/Personality: Good blend of design with woodturning appeal
  • Contribution to AAW: The newsletter should reflect the AAW’s purpose to “promote education, information, and organization to those interested in turning wood.”
  • Content: Contains useful woodturning technical and news-related information
  • Writing skills: Clear, concise, easily understandable, lively, well written and inviting.


Best AAW Chapter Website Contest

Please send contest questions to the AAW webmaster, Ed Davidson: webmaster@woodturner.org. Put "2009 Website Contest question" in subject line of your email.

A) Contest submissions:

  • Local Chapter webmasters or Chapter officers must submit their site for the competition.
  • Each Chapter who submits a site must provide a reviewer volunteer who will evaluate the websites of up to five other Chapter entries.
  • To enter, send e-mail to: webmaster@woodturner.org
  • Please put "Entry for Website Contest" in the subject line of your email.
  • Include your Chapter name, webmaster's name, webmaster's contact info, website address, and the name/contact info for your Chapter's volunteer evaluator.
  • If your Chapter's site has security access features, please include a temporary password for the judge's use.
  • You will receive an email verification that the submission was received. If you do not receive the email verification, please re-send your initial email or send a query to the webmaster.

  • They must have a link to the AAW home page from their home page
  • The Chapter must be registered as an AAW Chapter with the St Paul office
  • Email submissions must be made by March 31, 2009.

    - the AAW website and forum
    - the American Woodturner
    - and recognized at the 2009 Symposium

  • Ease of Navigation: easy to traverse pages, intuitive menu, links work
  • Use of Technology: appropriate use of scripting, styles, databases and search engines
  • Up to Date/Current Content: new info up front, archive material available
  • Website Content: contains useful woodturning technical and news-related information
  • Uniqueness/Personality: good blend of design with appropriate appeal to woodturning audience
  • Contribution to AAW: site reflects AAW image in a positive and productive way
  • Cross browser compatibility: site works with different browsers
  • Security: if product orders or password protected content
    are included, is appropriate security in place?
