Teaching Guides

Free for Members: AAW Teaching Guide (Digital Download)

This instructional guide was written for AAW members who have intermediate or advanced experience in turning and who are interested in sharing their enthusiasm for turning, but who may not be particularly experience in teaching. For experienced turners to help strategize their teaching efforts.

Free for Members: Let's Go For A Spin (Download) developed by Alan N. Leland. Designed for the instructor, this six-session lesson plan series of preferably day-long, or possibly 3-hour per evening workshop, is designed to provide beginning and intermediate students with a well-rounded set of turning skills. The intent is to provide a turning experience that will start students on their long and enjoyable journey into woodturning. The workshops start with the bead and cove stick, followed by one of several possible simple projects designed to provide students with a sense of accomplishment. Let's Go For a Spin is the newest in the AAW Teaching Resources program.

Free for Members: Pen Manufacture Enterprise - Teachers Guide (Download) developed by Kip W. Christensen, PhD. This guide was adapted from a manufacturing unit Kip Christensen teaches as part of a technology education course in manufacturing materials and processes. In his course, he groups his students into manufacturing companies consisting of approximately seven students. Each student has a specific title and related responsibilities. The material provided can be adapted to include a brief experience in manufacturing pens or an extensive experience in developing and running a pen-making business.(Members: Log in with your username and password to receive the free download.)

Free for Members: Teacher's Resource and Project Guide (Download) This 76 page teacher’s guide has been specifically designed to aid teachers, schools, instructors, and other educators in developing programs to teach woodturning skills to students ages 10 to 25. It includes important safety guidelines, best practices, lesson plan tips, and 18 engaging projects that build basic skills.

Free for Members: Planning and Presenting a Successful Demonstration with Frank B. Penta and the Chattahoochee Woodturners Our thanks to the Chattahoochee Woodturners, who came up with the idea for this presentation, identified Frank B. Penta as the presenter, and arranged for these recordings.

No matter how effective a demonstration can be, for most of us learning comes from doing, not just seeing. For this reason, the Chattahoochee Woodturners also have developed a workshop as the next step in training woodturners interested in developing or improving their demonstrations. These video presentations are accompanied by the written manual. The Chattahoochee Woodturners project was undertaken and supported by the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) and their Educational Opportunity Grants (EOG). Additional funding from the AAW, EOG program was provided to Tri-County Woodturners (Rudolph Lopez) for video editing. These materials were developed to share with the AAW Local Chapters. Thanks also to Jan DeCamp-Brown.
