What motivated the founders to start a chapter?
The 1987 AAW symposium.

Who were the founders?

The first President of the Michigan Association of Woodturners was Nancy L. Sharpless who attended the first symposium.

Where did the first group meet?
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Are there any original members still involved with the chapter?
Bob Kenning is the only charter member still with us. Other charter members have split off and formed other chapters closer to home.

What are some of the milestones of the chapter?
Over the years, we have become a Star Chapter and developed a mentoring program which meets one Saturday a month. We also have been turning tops for the Detroit Children’s Hospital for the past four years and turn bowls for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

How has the AAW affiliation affected the chapter?
Without the first AAW symposium 1987, we would not be here.

In the thirty weeks leading up to AAW's 30th Anniversary Symposium in Atlanta, we will be sharing the stories of members and chapters who joined in 1986 and are still with us today. We hope you enjoy their memories and insights!
