VICTORIA ADVOCATE: South Texas Woodturners - Decora Study Club learns about woodturning (03/19/2016)

The Decora Study Club met Feb. 23 at the Victoria Women's Club House. President Barbara Skipper called the meeting to order. Francisca Watts led the collect and the pledges to the United States flag and Texas flag. Monika Janak introduced the speakers John Carpenter and Ken Bruns, who gave a program on woodturning.

Carpenter explained that woodturning is turning wood into a shape, form or design using a lathe and an instrument to turn the wood. He mentioned that after turning wood into an object such as a spinning top, a Christmas tree, light pull, birdhouse, etc. that no two are alike. Bruns talked about the many different kinds of woods that are used but reclaimed mesquite wood was a favorite. In Hallettsville, a 300-year-old tree that had been chopped down was used to make buffalo heads for display. Members were invited to view many examples of items made by woodturning.

The membership committee consisted of Anne Roddy and Dolly Stokes. Hostesses of the Day were Sandra Pyle, Marge Jeane, Dee Skeete and Norma Nelson. Members donated money to the MD Anderson Project. Also, new officers for 2016-17 were elected.
