YAKIMA MAGAZINE: John Barany - Art as a Second Calling (01/06/2016)

Standing in wood artist John Barany’s garage-turned-woodshop, I found Barany’s passion and enthusiasm evident in every corner. Meticulously organized, with a label and a place for his extensive collection of tools and utensils, Barany’s “Cadillac shop” is home to hundreds of original creations.

Barany starts every piece he makes on a wood lathe — a tool that turns the piece of wood, no matter its size or shape, until smooth and round. After turning the wood he might carve, cut, sand, paint or glaze the wood depending on what he is making. His broad collection of work includes bowls and vases, whimsical sculptures and collaboration pieces he made with dozens of local and regional artists.

“All of my work is lathe based, using local wood, no exotics,” Barany said. “As I like to say, it all starts out round and brown.”
