American Woodturner Wins Two Minnesota Magazine & Publishing Association 2015 Excellence Awards

(SAINT PAUL, November 18)—The American Association of Woodturners (AAW), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art and craft of woodturning worldwide, is pleased to announce that its flagship publication, American Woodturner, won two awards in the 19th annual Minnesota Magazine & Publishing Association’s (MMPA) Excellence Awards held November 12, 2015, in Minneapolis. American Woodturner (AW) received a “Silver” award for “Overall Excellence” and a “Bronze” award for “Feature Article.” The MMPA Awards recognize and foster outstanding publishing achievements in the areas of editorial, design, marketing, digital publishing, and overall excellence. The judges for the competition are from all aspects of the publishing industry.

“It is an honor to have been recognized by the MMPA via its Excellence Awards,” explained Joshua Friend, Editor of American Woodturner. “I am extremely proud that American Woodturner held its own among many significant, well-known publications. Our journal covers a niche subject in a manner consistent with the quality of magazines with much broader distribution. Excellence in publishing has contributed to the AAW's success and growth over the last thirty years and continues to be a worthwhile ambition."

“The message was very clear at the MMPA Excellence Awards gala: there is still a place for print in the publishing industry,” stated Phil McDonald, Executive Director of the AAW.  “The increasing demand for digital solutions is very real, but a robust industry supporting quality print publications remains. We are exceedingly proud to be ranked among those receiving awards from the MMPA.”

The AAW offers inspiration, education, information, and organization to members of the woodturning community and those who aspire to turn wood. The American Woodturner journal serves amateur and professional woodturners, broadly ranging in age, skill level, and interests, and seeks to attract more youth and women members. Its content encompasses all woodturning-related information, and includes instructional material, feature stories, process articles, artist retrospectives, and profiles of innovative turners. AW is currently delivered to more than 15,000 AAW members worldwide and is available for purchase in select bookstores, woodworking, and arts/craft stores nationally. A full digital version is under development and will be introduced before the end of 2015.
