Women in Turning (WIT) has reached AAW committee status! The committee is dedicated to encouraging and assisting women in their pursuit of turning, to sharing ideas and processes to further members’ skills and creativity, and to increasing participation of women in the field of woodturning. The committee members are: Suzanne Kahn, Betty Scarpino, Dixie Biggs, and Jean LeGwin. The chair is AAW Board member Kathleen Duncan.

WIT, as it became known, is a result of an informal gathering of women at the Phoenix symposium. The group saw a need within AAW to attract and retain more women to woodturning.

The committee has already established the Regional Ambassadors Program. The purpose of this program is to meet the needs of women who want more opportunities to network, collaborate, learn and even socialize, with other WIT members. Regional Ambassadors seeks to establish strong links within and between existing local chapters, offer programing and events for WIT members at regional symposia and to assure that all women are aware of and take advantage of the extensive resources and services that the AAW makes available to all of its members.

Many WIT members contributed turned and embellished eggs as part of the Egg Crate project at the Pittsburgh Symposium this summer. The Egg Crate received the highest bid of the EOG auction. WIT plans to conduct other fundraising to support its projects and initiatives.
