Members of the Ozark Woodturners group welcomed a special guest Saturday to their regular monthly meeting at the Lakeview Civic Center, a woman they have been working with for five years — donating equipment and materials to help veterans rehabilitate after combat and non-combat injuries.

Alyssa Welch of Hot Springs is a certified therapeutic recreation specialist with the North Little Rock Veterans Administration Hospital.

Before developing a relationship with the Ozark Woodturners, Welch had watched an instructional video on how to woodturn a pen.

What’s woodturning you ask?

Woodturning is similar to pottery in that the crafter, or artist, uses a lathe and hand-held tools to cut a symmetrical shape into the wood as it rotates on the lathe.
