DAILY NEWS: Woodcarvers show at Gallery announced by Bill Rethlake (05/07/2019)

On display through the month of May at Art on the Square Gallery on Washington Street in Greensburg are the works of wood lathe artists Rick Shaffer and wood carving artist Leonard Schoettmer.

Shaffer will be turning wood blanks on two lathes set up at the gallery for the Second Friday Reception from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

“I have turned for about six years now,” Shaffer told the Daily News. “I started by hand-carving flatware and making things like puzzles and the like with a jigsaw and hand-carving tools, but the first time I used a wood lathe I was hooked.”

Shaffer is president of the Southeastern Indiana Woodturners, a group of around 60 artisans that meet twice a month in Holton to share techniques and the fellowship of like-minded craftsmen.

Shaffer sets up his woodturning booth at festivals to share the love of handcrafting and to sell his works.

“This is becoming a dying art, I think,” Shaffer said. “Nowadays, people are so used to going out and buying what they need, hand making items is becoming old hat, and I think that’s sad. It’s especially sad when you see how much fun it is to do, and how easy it is to do with the right equipment.”
