How many tops could a wood turner turn if a wood turner could turn tops?

The answer is 400 spin tops in the space of seven hours if you have 22 members of Redcliffe and District Woodcraft Society operating 10 lathes at once.

From beginners to pros, doctors to carpenters, it was all hands on deck as the society turned out 20 more spin tops than last year for sale at the 2018 Redcliffe Show. All proceeds will be donated to LifeFlight to help save lives of sick and injured patients all over Australia.

“People get mesmerised in turning. To pick something up like a piece of wood and 10 minutes later they’re spinning a top,” society president Warwick King said.

“They’re $2 donations and they get a top and they can see it being made or buy one already made.”

Some of the most experienced turners are able to produce a spin top in three minutes whereas Sue Gilberd, who made her first on the day, took up to 45 minutes.

“She came in and hadn’t used a lathe before and … I said why don’t you turn a top and become a top turner?” Mr King said.

The society has been taking part in the fundraiser for at least six years. Mr King said it would be up to the next president to decide how many they make next year.
