BELLAIRE EXAMINER: Tom Irven, Bellarie, TX - Bellaire artist to open first solo exhibit next week

Day dreams, night dreams, and boyhood memories are the inspiration of Bellaire artist Tom Irven’s wooden works of art. The 55-year-old wood artist recalls the apple orchards and acorns that adorned his grandparent’s home in his native Indiana though his upcoming exhibition ‘Slanted Symmetry: Works in Wood’ to premiere at the Archway Gallery in Montrose next week.]]>

Irven has been a professional wood sculptor for 28 years. He first encountered his love for the creative medium through his wood and metal shop classes in high school.

After earning his undergraduate business degree, and a small stint in the finance world, he traded the office for his wood studio on the second floor of the garage at his Bellaire home with his wife Krystal of 32 years.

“I really enjoyed making furniture and I worked for a cabinet shop for awhile. I started in high school and you never forget things you like. But, it hurt my back so I kind of went smaller and that’s when wood turning worked out. “

Tom would begin his artistic career making custom furniture for designers, but his true passion was in wood turning, a type of woodworking used to create wooden objects on a machine tool called a lathe. (10/28/2015)
