I am a full-time self-taught wood turning artist, with 30 years experience, striving to constantly grow in my abilities, and develop new and different pieces of work. After a brief sabbatical from full time turning Harold moved to Independence and is currently living in Concordia Kansas and setting up a studio there. Back at full time studio work Harold is currently in the process of creating sculptural forms inspired from nature and people and animals. He is in the beginning of working outside the box, or bowl so to say, working on the development of more sculptural and carved work. He will be spending the next year experimenting and developing those talents.

I have also worked with Oriented Strand Board (OSB), a manufactured sheet board used for subfloors in construction. I laminate these into many layers and create large classical forms. Many times people will mistake it for marble. With this medium I have been able to produce some large pieces in which I would not have been able to do with regular solid woods. I originally started with OSB producing classical urn shapes. I have also produced bowls and southwest style pots.

The process of creating one of my turnings begins with developing ideas in my mind and transposing those ideas into turned work. Many of my ideas come from close observation of the world around me. I don't limit my self to nature but also study many of the surroundings around us in our homes and workplaces for ideas. Many times the piece of raw wood will dictate the final form thus getting the most out of that piece utilizing all the character of the raw piece, turning it into a work of art.

My work is very tactile and I ask onlookers to pick up my work and feel it, in its entirety. I am constantly trying to create works of art that demand to be picked up and held. Some of my other work is created from solid woods that have voids, knots, splits, worm holes, cracks and fissures. I will use those flaws to unleash the natural beauty of the piece of wood. I strive to create "WOW!" pieces so unique in from, texture, color, grain, technique and finish that the observer can't help but to be inspired by the totality of the pieces. In fact, I challenge you to not want to touch my work. PLEASE TOUCH!!
