I'm an almost full time woodturner on the island of Maui, Hawaii. I started turning 20 years ago, when a giant Koa tree had to be taken out on my propertyo show me something "easy" to do with the wood... My family owns a large cattle ranch and I have acces to a lot of windfall and comercial harvested leftover Koa. I'm lucky that comercial operations leave behind all crotches! My trip to the mountains are marked by a happy return with my truck loaded with beautiful Koa croctches. I'm known as the Koa guy...
I love to do functional bowls and all the variations of ancient Hawaiian calabashes, along with the usual "Pewa" patch repair. I enjoy doing natural edge bowls, boxes, lidded bowls and custom commission work for weddings, birthdays, anniversarys etc. Koa is more than a wood in Hawaii, a nice piece becomes a family heirloom, cherish and handed down thru generations.
There is an abundance of wonderful woods in Hawaii, I have worked a lot of them, Lychee, Avocado, Mango, Milo, Macadamia, Ohia and more, but I always go back to my first love, Koa...
In February of 2016 we started the Maui Woodturners Association, I'm one of the founders, and the first President.
In 2017 I started writing for Woodturning UK magazine. I'm really having a great time working with Mark Baker, the editor. Aloha
