3) Preview of the September Issue of Woodturning FUNdamentals

New Addition to Chapter Best Practices

A new safety resource has been added to the AAW publications, Best Practices #127, Protective Equipment: Building a Safety Shield for a Chapter. This short publication includes a parts list and assembly information for building a safety frame. This is the same specification AAW follows for all of its demonstrations during the AAW annual symposium. Special thanks to Bob Law, Smokey Mountain Woodturners, and Ron Browning, Brevard County Woodturners, for providing input for the safety frame project. To access this new publication, click this link: http://www.woodturner.org/resource/resmgr/BestPractices/BP127SafetyShield.pdf

Regional Symposia

There are still several opportunities for your chapter members to attend various upcoming regional symposia over the next two months. As a reminder, information about upcoming regional symposia, and woodturning events at various local chapters, craft schools, and other organizations, is readily accessible online through the AAW website on the Woodturning Calendar at http://www.woodturner.org/events/event_list.asp, and the AAW Connects map at http://www.woodturner.org/?page=AAWConnectsMap.

Fresh Cut Symposium, Grand Marais, Minnesota

AAW is partnering with the North House Folk School, in Grand Marais, Minnesota, on an all-green woodturning symposium October 30-November 1. The event will offer a wide range of demonstrations, coursework, discussions, and lectures addressing every aspect of working with green wood, from preventing cracking and forging hook tools, to the creative design process and identifying good form. The event will provide a great opportunity for learning about (and then sharing) information about this often misunderstood form of woodturning. Lead presenters are Robin Wood, UK; Michael Hosaluk, Canada; and Michael Cullen, US. To learn more about this event, click this link: http://www.northhouse.org/programs/events/freshcut.htm
