WIT Presents

WIT Presents is a series of webinars featuring presentations by women woodturning artists. Through WIT Presents, we endeavor to inspire creativity, raise awareness of the work of women woodturners, and create community.

To view any of our past programs listed below, visit the WIT Archive.

Groundbreaking designer, furniture-maker, craftsperson and woodturner Joyce Anderson's life and career are explored in this fascinating presentation by author, researcher, and crafts biographer Craig Edelbrock. Edelbrock gained invaluable access to the archives of Joyce and her business partner and husband, Edgar, revealing that what society and the craft world generally assumed to be Edgar's work was in fact Joyce's.

March 2, 2024 | 4PM Eastern

London-based woodturning artist Eleanor Lakelin works only with trees grown in Britain, felled due to decay. A deep knowledge and a passionate interest in the natural properties of wood result in forms that seem true to the spirit of the material and which encourage us to look at the complexities of nature with a new perspective. Since 2011 she has concentrated on the vessel form, studying with established makers whenever possible but largely teaching herself to hollow and carve works of increasing scale and ambition. Her sculptural objects are created using a traditional woodworking lathe and centuries-old chisels and gouges alongside modern carving techniques.

Eleanor’s work is exhibited internationally and included in prestigious museum and private collections including The Museum of Arts & Design, New York; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The Museum of London; The National Museum, Oslo; The LOEWE Foundation, Madrid and Mint Museum, North Carolina.

In 2018, Eleanor received the People’s Choice Award for her piece Balanced Voids at the AAW Symposium. She lives and works in London, and is represented by Sarah Myerscough Gallery.

Canadian artist Marilyn Campbell started turning in the 1980s and is well-known for her elegant and groundbreaking sculptural work using split-turning techniques and epoxy. Kalia Kliban is a formally-trained woodworker from California. She is drawn to bowl forms, bringing an artist's eye to traditional functional turning. Both of these extraordinary woodturners have a fascinating story to tell. Please join us!

Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 4PM Eastern Daylight Time.

Jay Heryet’s often witty and always meticulously detailed work has been exhibited in the United Kingdom and United States. She’s been a woodturner since she discovered a lathe during a woodworking course in New Zealand, and since that time, the turning process and its creative possibilities have continued to engage her; charged with a fascination for the medium, driven to create curves which she sees, hears and feels.

Jay has exhibited and taught across the UK, and in the US and Ireland. She is the first woman to chair the Register of Professional Turners, a position she has held since 2021.
