Woodturners “TURN” 100+
Art Grabowski (pictured above) recently “turned” 101 years young. Last year, for his 100th birthday he turned a birthday bowl out of box elder. Among his plans for the coming year is a visit to the AAW and Gallery of Wood Art in Saint Paul.
Glenn Jeffries (pictured above) "turned” 100 years young on October 6. His family hosted a birthday celebration for him in Knoxville, TN. Although he doesn't turn much these days, he’s been busy wood burning on pieces of wood. He was a frequent visitor at nearby Arrowmont and is still a prolific artist!

Turning Southern Style XX
Turning Southern Style XX was held September 19-21 at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, in Dalton, GA. Featured demonstrators included Ray Key, Michael Hosaluk, and Todd Hoyer. Apply for an AAW Educational Opportunity Grant
AAW’s Educational Opportunity Grant (EOG) fund continues to be strong, thanks to the wonderful generosity of donors and buyers at our annual symposium auction. Funds are available for worthy proposals. To be eligible for a 2015 grant, applications must be received by December 31, 2014. All AAW members are eligible to apply (except for recipients of grants in 2014). You can complete the application form and review the guidelines.
The committee will not consider applications that are incomplete or vague, so please take care when applying. The following tips will help you with your application:

Complete the application online. Only online applications will be accepted. Submit well before the deadline!

Provide sufficient information so EOG committee members can clearly understand what you are requesting and how you intend to use the funds. Be concise; make your points directly and clearly.

Include details of how you will use the funds. Specific needs should be itemized. Funds will not be granted for miscellaneous, incidental, or unspecified expenses.

Explain your educational goal or experience you wish to obtain. Keep in mind these grants are intended for educational purposes. In particular, explain how others will benefit as well.
Grant amounts are limited: up to $1,000 for individuals and students and up to $1,500 for local chapters, schools, and nonprofit organizations. Your total budget may exceed these amounts; however, your grant request should not exceed EOG limits. For special situations, at the discretion of the EOG committee and the AAW Board, grants of larger amounts are occasionally available. In addition to EOGs, the committee will award ten certificates for registration to AAW’s 2015 international symposium.

Last Call for Demonstrators for AAW 2015 Symposium!
The October 15 deadline for Pittsburgh symposium demonstrator applications is rapidly approaching. Whether you’re a world famous turner and demonstrator, an up-and-coming demonstrator, or a demonstrator somewhere in between, we encourage you to apply.
Featured demonstrators have already been selected and the balance of the demonstrators will be selected from those who have submitted applications by the October 15 deadline.
The application process will take only a few minutes to complete. Apply today.
Chapter Scholarships
Once again, all AAW chapters are eligible to apply for at least one woodturning scholarship to either Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts or the John C. Campbell Folk School. A total of twenty-eight scholarships will be awarded to select AAW chapter members
To be nominated for a scholarship, chapter members must be AAW members and be chosen through a process authorized by their AAW chapter officers. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2014. Learn more and/or apply.
Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind
In 2013, Andi Sullivan (pictured above) introduced participants of the Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind to the joy of turning wood into beautiful pieces of art on the lathe with an invitation to bring a group to the AAW Symposium. The six Tampa Lighthouse craftspeople who attended were able to feel a variety of finished turned pieces, which was greatly appreciated since they visualize through touch. Additionally, each had the opportunity to make a pen.
Then in September 2013, Andi was able to get supplies and funding to launch the Tampa Lighthouse’s woodturning program. Everyone was excited at the possibility of continuing to learn. The first class had seven participants. Since then, the Tampa Lighthouse has hosted 14 classes, taught by three AAW member instructors, and have made more than 175 pieces, including pens, key chains, and letter openers. After just one year, the group of seven original turners has grown to 51!

AAW is an educational, charitable organization. Our membership fees and product sales alone do not fully cover our expenses. As a result, we rely on the generous support of AAW donors for critical programmatic and operational support.
Since the AAW is qualified as 501(c)(3) nonprofit under U.S. tax code, donors may claim the amount of their donations as a deduction when filing U. S. taxes. Your donation in any amount will help us continue to provide opportunities to provide education, information, and organization to anyone interested in turning wood.

Artistry in Woodturning Exhibit
The Northwestern Michigan Woodturners will exhibit their woodturnings at their “Artistry in Woodturning” at the Main Branch of the Traverse Area District Library from October 1 – 31, along with a photo display of the woodturning process. The Northwestern Michigan Woodturners club has been recognized as a “Star Chapter,” which signifies that 100% of their club members are also members of the AAW.
Southwest Association of Turners Woodturning Symposium (SWAT)
The 2014 Southwest Association of Turners Woodturning (SWAT) symposium was held August 22-24 at the Waco Convention Center, Waco, TX. Turners, vendors, and guests who participated left with new skills, tools, friendships, and a fresh appreciation for the craft of woodturning.
