Elements, 2021 AAW Professional Outreach Program (POP) Exhibition and Auction
As a theme, “elements” offers much to explore: from the concrete definition as an irreducible part of something else, to the ancient worldview that earth, air, fire, and water are the constituents of all things; from the way we think about sorting out and reordering elements when creating new forms, to the feeling of being “in one’s element” or—sadly—out of it.

For this exhibit, forty studio artists turned their attention and creativity to interpreting the theme of roots. Whether literally made of root or reflecting an artist's personal journey, the pieces in this exhibit are intriguing, thought-provoking and a pleasure for the eye to behold.

The Spindle is third of an annual series of themed exhibits created by the Professional Oureach Program of the AAW. This year, over forty studio woodturners were invited to transform into art what is perhaps the most recognizable turned wood form: the spindle. Like last year's challenge, The Sphere, the artists have used a simple form as the foundation for dynamic, complex and beautiful work.

Turnabout-Women at the Lathe is the first exhibition organized by the Women in Turning (WIT) committee of AAW. Reflecting our membership, we created a blended invitational and juried show that celebrates both known and unknown voices in our field. The 27 sculptural pieces were created by women artists from the United States, England, Wales, Canada, and Taiwan, ranging in age from their early 20s to their 80s.
