AAW has been conducting annual woodturning symposia since 1987. This page provides information on the upcoming 26th Annual AAW symposium, to be held in San Jose, California Friday June 08 through Sunday June 10, 2012, at the San Jose Convention & Cultural Facilities.

Symposium Information

  • The 2012 symposium will be held in San Jose, California, at the McEnery Convention Center, part of San Jose One Connection. (Click Here)
  • The symposium is open to anyone with an interest in woodturning. Full registration fee includes demonstrations, the Instant Gallery, trade show exhibitions, auctions and membership for non-members.

Demonstrations

  • San Jose will feature a line-up of more than 85 demonstrators and panelists. Click here for the current list.
  • For a list of demonstrations and panels planned by each demonstrator and panelist click here.
  • Four Emerging Artists (sponsored by the Professional Outreach Program) will provide special demonstrations during the symposium: David Earle,  Rudy Lopez, Elizabeth Lundburg, and Lynne Yamaguchi.

Symposium Schedule

  • A Schedule Grid will be available by mid-march and the Symposium Planning Guide will be available in May.

Symposium Registration

  • If you would like to mail in your 2012 symposium registration form and check, click on this link and print a copy.
  • Many areas at the Symposium are open to the public, and do not require registration. These areas include the Instant Gallery, Trade Show, all of the Special Exhibits, and the Educational Opportunity Grant (EOG) auction. The banquet requires a ticket, but after the banquet, the doors will be opened to the public, so galleries and collectors who may not want to attend other symposium functions can bid on EOG auction items.
  • Technical and Vocational Ed teacher's symposium registration fee (not including banquet ticket) will be waived upon request - AAW membership required. A Technical and Vocational Ed teacher is defined as: one who works in these fields full-time, and in an accredited public or private grade school, jr high/high school, technical school or college. If you qualify, give the AAW office a call at 651-484-9094 to register.

Symposium fees are:

Through May 15, 2012: $250 for members and $310 for non-members
After May 15, 2012: $300 for members and $360 for non-members
After May 28 and onsite: $350 for members and $410 for non-members
- For cancellations through May 15, 2011, a $50 processing fee will be deducted. After May 15, the registration fee is not refundable

Youth Registration:

At the 2012 AAW International Symposium, in San Jose, youth (ages 10 through 18) may receive free registration. Each youth must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Accommodations and Lodging

San Jose Marriott, 301 South Market Street, San Jose, 408.280.1300.  Rooms are available June 4th through the 12th, 2012, at the special $129 room rate.  This rate is offered until May 16th or until the block is sold-out.  AAW rate available beginning July 30th.

  • On-site UPS service is available for those who would like to ship things to San Jose before the symposium, or ship that load of exotic wood home after the symposium.

Special Exhibitions, Presentations and Auctions

  • A Walk in the Woods: This exhibit’s goal is to honor California’s many majestic forests.  Entries will be accepted online November 1, 2011, through February 12, 2012.

Instant Gallery

  • The Instant Gallery is the largest display of turned-wood objects shown under one roof. It is an amazing showcase of interesting and varied work.
  • If you are registered for the Symposium, you can bring three of your best pieces to add to the excitement. (Demonstrators may submit 6 pieces.) While there, vote for your favorite chapter-challenge project!
  • Those artists who submit pieces to the Instant Gallery have the option to sell their work while it is on display.

Chapter Collaborative Challenge

Return to the Community Charity Donations

  • AAW's Return to the Community Exhibition is Empty Bowls, a Grassroots Movement to Help End Hunger. The goal of Empty Bowls is to raise money to help fight hunger and raise awareness about the issue of hunger and food security.
