Douglas Fisher - "A Future Awaits Us", 2008, Curly maple, 13" x 21/4".
Native style art of the Pacific Northwest.
The art of Canadian turner Douglas J Fisher is grounded in an appreciation of things past. This is most evident in his long running series featuring Pacific Northwest Coast imagery which he learned through a seven year collaboration with native artist Harris Smith.
Douglas credits his leap into creating wood art full time to Jacques Vesery. “I saw him at the first West Coast Roundup Symposium and came away truly inspired. Inspired not only to create pieces that were uniquely my own but to each time do the best that I could and to only put my best out into the world.” Before this he was pumping out work as fast as he could to make a living and not taking a breath to look at it as critically as he should. In the first year after this his production decreased by 30% but sales increased 50%. “It was a lesson well learned.”
Besides Jacques, Douglas also credits other woodturners who have influenced his work, most notably, David Ellsworth, Al Stirt and Hayley Smith as well as furniture maker Kristina Madsen.
