Title: Aspen Grove

Price: $4,500

Dimensions: 5" Dia. x 9" high

Materials: Bass wood

Other info: This elaborate turning was created as a tribute to Mother Nature's beautiful Aspen Groves in the Colorado Mountains.

It was turned as three separate pieces on a lathe from basswood.

It's nine inches tall and five inches in diameter, with an inner, outer, and base turning. The walls have been turned to a thinness of only point two centimeters. There are over 2,500 openings piercing away over 40% of the skin.

An Aspen Grove image was hand sketched on both turnings, gaps between subject parts were cut away to define the outlines of individual trees, branches and the gaps amongst the leaves. The image was further defined and detailed using pyrography pens. The pyro work was not simple outlining of the parts with lines as that was accomplished by the piercing. A very light touch with sharp edges and tips was used to simulate the dark tree trunk bark markings and shading common on the bark of aspen trees. This was a laborious, tediously detailed process that consumed much of the effort creating this piece. Most of the burning was by drawing the burning tip across areas.

Much pyro work was spent defining the leaf clusters but in the end the visual effect was not acceptable. I then covered the leafy area with yellow/gold acrylic paints and surface textured the paint for a more realistic effect.

Pyro work was used to create the three dimensional texture around the base to define the grasses and brush.

The color was hand painted using acrylics. Using a week wash of color took the starkness away from the extreme black burn marks. A matte finish using Krylon covers the surface.

Viewing this see-through diorama piece reveals four layers of tree trunks and leaves. This is dramatically effective when the piece is viewed revolving on a turntable. To see the spectacular result go to this web site: www.woodturner-gallery.com/aspengrove.mov

When this piece is displayed to the public I do so on a custom made turntable that is visible in the web site video vignette. It has a motion sensor on two sides that detects a person moving in the vicinity then activates the battery-powered turntable for a one-minute period. It also has a glass dome to prevent anyone from touching the piece and to keep the dust off.

The Aspen Grove was part of the juried exhibition - Turning to the Future: A Fresh Look at Wood Art - at the Grovewood Gallery in Asheville, NC in 2009.
