Other info: Carved from a birch, burl cap, this work is a sprawling, irregular form celebrating the glorious randomness of natural material. Oiled and then lacquer finished.

Other info: Turned, carved, selectively dyed, and lacquered. There is always a tension, a cognitive dissonance if you will, for those of us using natural materials. We depend on a healthy ecosystem, yet have little control or influence over those who harvest our materials. If the word for world was forest, the word for world now seems to be profit

Other info: Big leaf maple burl, turned and carved. This work continues the series of pieces with stylized tree supporting structure, giving the impression of profound stability and visual movement. Nysos is a Greek mountain god.

Other info: Turned, carved, and then dyed with a multi-layering process from red maple burl. The legs are raised vein leaf forms. The title is a faint homage to an earlier dwelling place.

Other info: Spalted Catalox Sapwood Burl, Turned and carved from a single chunk of burl, base then selectively dyed, lacquer finish.

Time is the central reflection here; the time it takes the burl to form, the time it takes spalting to occur, the time needed for the turning and carving, and in each case, relative to the applicable scale of comparison, the time is a lot.

Living in the Appalachian Mountains, the views are up along the ridgelines, but life is carried on in the coves, isolated valleys surrounded by high peaks, with only a pass or two to connect to the world outside.

Other info: I received the burl from Chris Ramsey, who had broken his back, literally, handling the huge chunk of wood, The rupture in the side seemed only appropriate as karmic balancing, while the twisting fin legs symbolize the difficult and often meandering paths we take, not only in recovering from disaster, but every day as artists trying to find a way to meaningful expression.

Other info: Sometimes turning is not the only, or even the best technique for handling extremely convoluted wood. With this piece, I saw the finished work and the name almost at once. The name is from a Roger Zelazny story I read 30 odd years ago.

Other info: Red oak burl, turned and later carved, continuing a series of goblet related forms with natural elements. This piece was turned from very wet burl to allow for maximum wood movement to distort the rim and create texture on the surface.
