Last year, the AAW board made a decision to expand and improve video coverage of the National Symposium by producing two 90-minute "Techniques" videos, and an expanded "Instant Gallery" tape with more attention to the gallery critique and newsegments on related woodturning exhibits at the symposium city. That decision has really paid off this year with the three "best ever" symposium videos from Tacoma. The rationale for offering two "Techniques" videos is to show each of the featured demonstrations in more-or-less complete form. This gives the members who were unable to attend the symposium (and even those who did attend) a comprehensive look at the demos, instead of just a snapshot. The board wanted to provide solid instructional content on these videos, and we have clearly succeeded in that. You will really learn a lot from these tapes.

Techniques Video - Volume One
Luke Mann - Bowl Turning Systems from Green Wood
An excellent review of fundamental bowl turning techniques, packed with lots of reliable information. Everything from chucking methods to grinding.

Hans Finsterwalder - Lace Top Boxes
Hans turns a maple burl box that has concentric rings in the top that are offset about an inch from another set of concentric rings turned on the underside of the lid, forming a delicate, multi-axis pierced effect.

Bob Flexner - Finishing with Oils and Waxes
Lace Top BoxThis internationally acclaimed expert in wood finishing shares his vast knowledge about two of the most common finishes used by woodturners. Flexner blows many of the myths about oils and waxes, and shows how to mix-your-own.

Simon Levy - Hand/Eye Connection and Principles of Design
With the use of various drawing techniques, this accomplished artist and educator, helps his audience understand how to conceive new vessel profiles. He also offers a solid set of guidelines for good three-dimensional design.

Jacques Vesery - Surface Designs and Enhanced Coloring
Vesery's unique carving and coloring techniques have given him a celebrated presence among emerging woodturning artists. He demonstrates all the delicate details of his feathered vessels that are making him well-known.
Techniques Video - Volume Two
Chris Stott - Turning an Inlaid Box
Perhaps the best-known box turner in the world, this Englishman's dry wit and true wisdom shines through as he turns a beautiful pink ivory box with an inlaid mesquite burl lid.

Yoshinobu Kakizawa - Oriental Turning Methods
This award-winning 24 year-old turns the classic Kokeshi "crying dolls" that are a mainstay of his village in rural Japan. Former AAW President Alan Lacer narrates Kakizawa's techniques and, in a fun comic moment, he joins in painting one of the dolls.

Angus Hoban - The Great Highland Bagpipe
In one of the most unusual demonstrations ever offered at a national symposium, this native of the Isle of Man unveils the secrets of turning your own set of pipes. He even enters the room playing "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes he recently finished.

Frank Sudol - The Boring Bar/A Summary of What's Available
Sudol is perennially one of the most popular turning demonstrators wherever he goes. His folksy humor keeps the room in stitches, and his complete overview of the boring bar, in all it's varieties, is a real eye-opener for anyone who wants to turn deep hollow vessels.

And More!
Also featured on the Techniques Videos are shots of the Banquet and Auction, the Trade Show and this year the amazing pieces in the Chapter Collaborative Challenge.

The Instant Gallery and Critique Video
An awesome array of turned art is on display in this year's Instant Gallery video. Well-known woodturner and design expert William Moore heads up the critique panel. He is joined by Ruth and David Waterbury, prominent woodturning collectors from Minnesota. The insights and observations are extremely valuable information to any turner striving to improve and expand their skills. This year's gallery was another incredible show of the "cutting edge" in the art of woodturning today.
