The woodturning field has grown exponentially in the past forty years. Yet, a grasp of the concepts beyond technique and process have changed very little. Confusion in language and intent between makers, gallery owners, curators, buyers, and others, is many times awkward and therefore problematic. The lack of formal artistic training in woodturning impedes the exploration of what is possible and what is next. What does the future hold for woodturners if they make beautiful objects but cannot communicate their ideas with a comprehensive, meaningful language?
Language is the key to learning and a baseline of communication for generations to come.
The POP Video Learning Library aims to help woodturners, buyers, collectors, curators, writers, gallery owners, and others, develop a shared understanding of the language of woodturning in order to communicate more effectively. Video interviews, featuring respected professionals in the field, will inspire and teach woodturners how to share their creative ideas with one another, and with others including buyers, curators, and gallery owners.
The library videos will focus on a growing selection of essential topics, including aesthetics, collecting, connections and relationships, critiquing work during local chapter meetings, design, finishing artwork, influences, influence and copying, making a living in the arts, marketing, photography, pricing, teaching, and your own work. We have already interviewed more than 30 professional woodturners and collectors, and plan to compile the footage into topic segments of 18-minutes each (maximum based on the TED Talks model). The POP Video Learning Library will be accessible on the AAW website and on Vimeo. Click here to watch a 13-minute sample video, briefly covering four of the fourteen topics.
Consider making a designated donation to the POP Video Learning Library to help us complete this important project. All funds for the project will be used to professionally edit existing video interviews into the full fourteen topic segments.
We need your support. 100% of the POP Video Learning Library project costs will be underwritten by donations and our fundraising goal is $25,000.
