Turning to the Future Program

Cedar Ridge High School students, Matthew Shiplett, Isaac Lutz, Hunter Thompson (pictured above), showed off their work at the county Career and Technical Education open house. The Chapel Hill Woodturners chapter, Chapel Hill, NC, partnered with Cedar Ridge to offer the school’s first woodturning program in connection with the AAW’s Turning to the Future program.

The Tennessee Association of Woodturners (TAW) chapter hosted a Turning to the Future pen class for the Narrow Gate Foundation (pictured above), instructed by the TAW’s own Jeff Brockett. Each participating student had a TAW member mentor during the class and each signed up for a free one-year AAW student membership through the Turning to the Future program. TAW has been working for the past 3 1/2 years with the Narrow Gate Foundation, a nonprofit that educates, inspires, and empowers young men, and has introduced woodturning to more than 100 students each year.

Turnin’ Tops for Kids

The Tidewater Turners of Virginia chapter participated in a Breakfast with Santa fundraising event at Founders Inn in Virginia Beach to benefit Children's Hospital of The King’s Daughters. They delivered more than 340 wooden toy tops for children at the event, completed a live demonstration, and made another 60 tops on site. The children continued to beg for more!

It’s a Small World

Carol Woodbury, York, PA, recently visited South Africa and attended a small craft show to benefit local charities in Knysna. Turned wooden tops, just like the ones we do for our shows, drew her to the table of Wally Rossini (pictured above), who explained that he is the longest-standing AAW member in South Africa – 17 years! They had a lovely conversation and Carol discovered that Wally also does advanced turning and thin pierced work in addition to tops!

AW Video-Accompanied Articles

American Woodturner’s December issue features an article by woodturner, sculptor, and furniture maker, Mark Sfirri, entitled, Building Blocks: Evolution of a Turned Sculpture. The story reveals Mark’s process for turning his massive spherical wedge sculpture and is accompanied by a five-minute online video that further illustrates his method for creating the huge form. You’ll want to check it out! Look forward to seeing more AW articles accompanied by value-added online video in 2015. Sign in and read the current issue.
