Educational Opportunity Grants
Share |

AAW’s Educational Opportunity Grant (EOG) program offers grant funding to selected applicants for woodturning education. The EOG fund continues to be strong, thanks to the wonderful generosity of donors and buyers who have supported our annual symposium auction. Funds are available for worthy proposals and AAW membership is not a prerequisite to apply for grant funding.

Purpose of the Program

  • Provide educational opportunities that expand and enrich the entire woodturning community.
  • Provide ways that woodturning skills may be shared with local chapters, the community, schools, and others.
  • Create opportunities for woodturners who would otherwise not be financially able.

Grant Types

Please note: One grant application may specify one grant type -- financial, symposium registration, or lathe.

Financial Grants

To expand and share woodturning resources, the Board has established a fund from which grants are awarded to individuals (adults and youths), chapters, and other woodturning-related associations. The grants cover expenses such as tuition, registration, demonstrators' fees, travel, lodging, and meals.

  • Individual - $1,000 maximum, may reapply five years after last award
  • Student (full time, under 25) - $1,000 maximum, may reapply every two years
  • Chapter - $1,500 maximum, may reapply every year
  • Other (school, non-profit group, etc.) - $1,500 maximum, may reapply every year

Symposium Grants

The AAW will award 10 certificates for registration to the AAW Annual International Symposium. These certificates will be for registration only and may be used for the current year.

Lathe Grants

For 2017, in addition to monetary Educational Opportunity Grant Awards, the EOG committee will also accept grant applications for wood lathes that are intended to introduce woodturning to individuals and/or groups who otherwise may not have an opportunity to learn woodturning. Thanks to the generosity of Jet (JPW Industries), Nova (Teknatool), and others, there will be up to nineteen lathes available for awards as follows:

  • Up to ten Jet JWL-1015 lathes, each with a lathe stand, Nova chuck, set of basic tools, and a face shield. Available for delivery in June. These lathes are made available by Jet-Powermatic and are used in the youth program.
  • Up to nine Nova 46300C Comet II Variable Speed Midi Lathes, each includes a lathe stand and a Nova Chuck. Available for delivery during the first and second quarter of 2017. These lathes were made available by Nova Teknatool and were used in the WIT hands-on program.

  • AAW membership is not a prerequisite to apply for grant funding.
  • Individual recipients may reapply five years after last award ($1,000 maximum) and must submit a report about their experiences within six months of their completion for possible inclusion in the American Woodturner journal.
  • Students (full time, under age 25) may reapply every two years after last award. ($1,000 maximum).
  • A local chapter applicant must be affiliated with the AAW and may reapply every year ($1,500). A report should be submitted for the American Woodturner journal.
  • A school or "other” applicant may reapply every year ($1,500 maximum). Applications in this category must demonstrate an ability to enhance the mission of the AAW, namely "to provide education, information, and organization to those interested in woodturning."

Application Timelines

  • Applications will be accepted through December 31 annually. Only one application per member, chapter, or other organization will be accepted.
  • Schedules - Those applications submitted for consideration must be made no later than December 31. Recipients of grants will be notified in the second quarter and must acknowledge acceptance of the grant within 30 days of the notification.

Selection Process

  • Each member of the EOG committee will score each application on a scale of 1 to 7. The top scores will be awarded an Educational Opportunity Grant. Emphasis will be placed on the ability and opportunity of an applicant to share information gained. Economic need may also be considered.

  • Below are samples of successful past grant applications. Please note: These samples should be used for reference purposes only. The current grant application is slightly different from these examples.
