Name: Tim Heil
Home Town: Gem Lake, MN
Home Club: Minnesota Woodturners
Years Turning: 14

Tim lives in Minnesota and has been turning for 14 years.

What motivated you to join AAW?
I joined the AAW to get more involved with the woodturning community. I had limited turning experience from high school wood shop but the AAW fast-forwarded me into the world of woodturning.

When you look at your turnings, what do you see?
I see that the things I make are useful and beautiful. I make lots of screwdrivers, rolling pins, candlesticks, and fishing lures.

Who, or what, was your greatest teacher/influence?
Alan Lacer has been a big influence. His instruction taught me the classics of woodturning. Also, Trent Bosch has guided me along the way.

What was your happiest turning moment?
My best turning moment was seeing my daughters wear hair clips that I turned for them.
What is your favorite wood/tool and why?
I have two favorite woods. I like buckthorn because it cuts clean and takes a finish well. It has an unusual burnt orange color that makes it unique. I also like lilac because of the purple streaks in the grain. My favorite tool is a shop broom that I inherited from my father-in-law. He used it in his shop for over forty years.

Where do you see the field of woodturning going?
I see woodturning getting back to its roots. I believe objects like wood bowls, rolling pins, and candle sticks will become more and more popular.

In addition to woodturning, what other crafts/hobbies have you enjoyed?
In addition to woodturning, I'm an avid bike rider.  I've ridden from the West Coast to the East Coast under pedal power.

Has being a part of AAW affected your life and work? How?
Being part of the AAW is a gift. My dearest friends are connections I've made through woodturning. Plus, most of my personal travel centers around woodturning gatherings.

What is your favorite project or piece?
My favorite project is making screwdrivers. I've made over 2,000 and enjoy giving the best ones away. They are my "calling card."

How has your local chapter helped you?
I have belonged to the Minnesota Woodturners since 2002. We have over 250 active members. Meetings are a great place to meet friends, share, and learn.
