Chapter Anniversary Profiles:
South Florida Woodturners Guild

Area Served: Miami, FL
First President: David Freundlich
Current President: David Piper
Founded: April 12, 1988

What motivated the founders to start a chapter?
Three turners, led by David Freundlich, included Cas Grabowski (who served as an editor for the AW journal article “All About Wood”), and Mick Lasher met to share ideas and interests in turning. They also wanted to open the meetings to the public and to anyone with an interest in turning.

How many joined the new chapter?
22

Who were the founders?
David Freundlich, Cas Grabowski, and Mick Lasher.

Where did the first group meet?
The chapter first met at Cutler Ridge Junior High in South Florida.

How much were the dues?
The was no charge originally, but that changed to $15 to cover costs of printing and mailing newsletters (there was no email at the time) and today it’s $35 single and $40 family.

Are there any original members still involved with the chapter?
David Freundlich

What are some of the favorite memories of the chapter?
Affiliation with Fairchild Botanical Gardens and Montgomery Botanical Gardens providing demonstrations on turning is a favorite chapter memory because the demonstrations have led to attendees becoming members. Also, providing mentoring for teenagers with the Open House Ministries Homestead, Local Boy Scout clubs, and a program with veterans support Miami are favorite chapter memories.

What are some of the milestones of the chapter?
One chapter milestone is our move to our current location Robert Morgan Educational Center, which provides a room for monthly meetings and demos. Also, our partnership with Fairchild Botanical Gardens, Native Plant Society, and Fruit and Spice Park, which are in South Miami and Homestead, provide free space for demonstrations and one activity yearly.

How has the AAW affiliation affected the chapter?
Affiliation with AAW has provided affordable Insurance, which some organizations require, as well as tips and information we can share with members. Also, we have had some great speaker/demos from traveling turners.
