Spring 2009 Results

About the Contest

The Spring 2009 AAW Forum woodturning contest results are in. Congratulations to Craig Magera (aka "Dreher"), of Simpsonville, SC, - the first place contest winner. This was the 17th turning contest held on the AAW forums. The subject was stools, as outlined in the Spring 2009 (Vol 24 #1) issue of the AW Journal.

The AAW would like to thank Peter Galbert, author of the stool article. His comments were: "Great little stool! Small projects like this one lend themselves so beautifully to fanciful design and wildly figured wood. I wouldn't have picked up on the snowman theme until you mentioned it, now it's so obvious. Thanks for taking the time to share it."

If you would like to consider entering the next contest, watch for announcements in the AAW forums.

Craig's winning contest entry :

This is a snowman stool. The bottoms of the legs are snowmen with a tapered tenon at the top. The legs are cherry, the stool top is oak and the wedges are purple heart. I made the tapered mortises with a spade bit that I reground to a six degree angle. The stool is 13 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall.
