MERCURY: Builder wins awards for woodturning hobby (11/27/2016)

Paul Sweet, aged 50, was recognised by Mark Sanger – a world renowned woodturning expert – for an ornamental egg cup he made last year.

Mr Sweet started woodturning only two years ago after he lost three fingers in an accident with a saw, but won another prize at a show earlier this year.

He told the Mercury Mr Sanger said ‘he could not have done it any better himself’ when he was given the award.

He said: “I won the award from Mark Sanger and then I won first prize for most original craft at a local show, so I thought I must be doing something right.

“After my accident I had to find something to do. We had an old wood lathe which I mended and it started from there.”

The full-time builder spends most nights and weekends turning logs into beautiful bowls, plates and ornaments which he sells from his house in Badgworth.
