If Dave Skaggs has a monkey on his back, it’s probably made of wood and one he made himself.
Skaggs, of Crown Point, and his friends get together monthly to have good conversation and practice the ancient art of wood turning. Skaggs said he has been addicted to the art since he first tried it several years ago.
He’s not alone. Wood turning has been around since approximately 1300 B.C. The form of woodworking is used to create wooden objects on a lathe, a stationary machine that has a spinning object in between two points.
Wood turning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood.
“It’s very relaxing,” said Joe Schlawin, who has been making wood art for about four years. “I put some of my work in an art show.” (9/30/2015)
