Cindy Bowden named Executive Director (12/06/10):
Cindy Bowden, a long-time museum administrator and a leader in the international craft community, has been appointed executive director of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW), the association announced today. Bowden, who will assume her new duties on January 3, 2011, has been executive director of the American Museum of Papermaking at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta for the past 17 years. She also is currently president of the World Craft Council North America.
"We are delighted to bring a person with Cindy Bowden's exceptional administrative talents and knowledge of the craft field into a defining role within this organization," said Tom Wirsing, president of the AAW Board of Directors. "She not only has the know-how to manage an organization of nearly 14,000 members but also will bring significant fundraising credentials to our work."
Founded in 1986, the AAW is one of the largest craft organizations in the nation and will observe its 25th anniversary in 2011 at the group's annual symposium in Saint Paul next June.
"Cindy Bowden's appointment concludes an international search effort that encompassed a wide range of outstanding candidates," said Warren Carpenter, AAW board member who heads the transition committee. "She will take over at a time of new growth and energy within AAW, and her exemplary management abilities and operating style will be tremendous assets in meeting future challenges."
At the American Museum of Papermaking at Georgia Tech, Bowden solicited grants from foundations and individual donors to establish an endowment, expand exhibition space, and organize traveling educational programs around the world.
The AAW seeks to foster a wider understanding and appreciation of lathe-turning as a traditional and contemporary craft and a form of art among the general public and amateur, part-time, and professional turners. Membership in AAW brings a variety of benefits, including a bimonthly magazine, insurance coverage, scholarships, national symposiums, educational opportunities for newcomers and youth, and a website where turners can display and market their woodturnings.
The annual symposium, to be held June 24-26, 2011, in Saint Paul, will include live presentations, an auction of selected woodturnings, an instant gallery showcasing current woodturning craft, a rotation of how-to and hands-on demonstrations, the world's largest trade show of commercial woodturning vendors, and a youth training center.

IRS regulations have changed, and now require all 501(c)(3) non-profits to file an annual report, regardless of income level. Previously, there was a $25,000 income threshold that would trigger an IRS filing requirement - but that has been changed. The law now requires any income less than $500,000 to be reported using Form 990-N, also known as an "e-postcard". Small nonprofit organizations at risk of losing their tax-exempt status because they failed to file required returns for 2007, 2008 and 2009 can preserve their status by filing returns by Oct. 15, 2010, under a one-time relief program, the IRS announced on July 26, 2010. If you are an officer in an AAW local chapter that is also a 501(c)(3), please look into this situation immediately. Click on this link to learn more.

The Transition Committee is pleased to report to you that we have posted the Position Profile for our next Executive Director. It can be viewed through this link. We encourage members to circulate this information to potential candidates as well as others who might be able to suggest candidates.
To develop the profile, the Board undertook a deliberative process that included an organizational review as well as input from staff, advisory board members and Directors. We also reviewed the membership survey conducted last fall in preparation for a robust discussion in which we considered AAW’s current situation and future direction in order to identify our current and future executive leadership needs. In the process, we clarified all of the qualifications for the position, our picture of success for the new executive's tenure, and what AAW needs to do to ensure we work effectively with the new Executive Director.

AAW President, Tom Wirsing, has set up a special committee to review and make suggested changes to the AAW Bylaws. The goal of the committee will be to work over the next couple of months and have a set of proposed changes put together that can be sent out to the membership with the December 2010 Journal. Tom Wirsing has appointed Ron Sardo and Dale Larson as Co-Chairs of the committee. The committee members come from across the United States and have a wide variety of backgrounds. They include David Walser, Rob Wallace, Jerry Robertson, Mark Mandell, Judy Kingery and David Moore. All are AAW members who have agreed to help out with this important task. If you wish to contact the committee, please email your ideas to this address.
A message from the AAW Ethics Committee has been posted on the members area main page. Please log in to read this important message.
The AAW and Mary Lacer have reached a settlement. Both the AAW and the MAG have called off their proxy drives, and the AAW has cancelled the August 28th Special Meeting. The AAW Board of Directors wishes to thank all those who have supported the AAW during these trying times. It is our hope that all members of the AAW will renew damaged friendships and get back to the business of sharing our passion for woodturning.
On June 21, 2010 the AAW Board of Directors requested the resignation of its Executive Director, Mary Lacer. This has created quite a controversy within the AAW, with many members unhappy with the decision of the Board of Directors. In retrospect, the Board of Directors agrees it could have handled this situation better, and regrets the divisions within the membership this has created.
Mary Lacer’s supporters, who have adopted the name the Member Action Group (MAG), have launched a proxy initiative to recall the Board of Directors. Both Mary and the Board of Directors recognize this effort is dividing the AAW membership. Mary and the Board have agreed to stop the proxy drives and to cancel the August 28th Special Meeting. Mary and the Board have reached a mutual agreement so the AAW and its members can move ahead in a positive way. Mary has accepted the Board’s offer for her to fill an advisory position to help with the training of the next executive director.
The Board acknowledges that Mary Lacer was not involved in any financial wrongdoing. The Board of Directors simply wishes to move the AAW in new directions.
Mary Lacer, AAW President Tom Wirsing, and the entire Board of Directors, hope that everyone on both sides of this controversy can “bury the hatchet”, renew damaged friendships, and get on with the business of sharing our passion for woodturning.
Two changes were made to AAW Bylaws, effective 7/22/10, via a teleconference meeting of the Board, as follows: adding to the end of Section 4.02: "The general membership must be notified 30 days in advance, of the time and place of any Special Meeting.", and in Section 4.03, in the last sentence - dropped "or notice" and added at the end: "in compliance with these bylaws and Minnesota law."
The purpose of the first change is to ensure that the general membership is provided with sufficient notice to be able to attend a Special Meeting. The membership has the right to know of the meeting so that they may attend and vote on issues brought before the meeting. The purpose of the second change is to ensure that any corporate action taken, complies with AAW Bylaws and the laws of the State of Minnesota. These changes to the Bylaws are not fundamental changes and are permitted under Section 14.01 of the Bylaws.

The scam that wasn't...
It's recently been reported that there is a telephone scam going around where past or present AAW members are asked for personal information under the guise of establishing an American Woodturner magazine subscription. The AAW home-office has just completed an investigation, and it turns out that individual AAW memberships have in fact been procured through Amazon.com.
The AAW uses the EBSCO service to provide libraries and schools with a subscription to our magazine. All fine and good...that system has been in place for over 15 years.
However, in 2002, EBSCO expanded their coverage to include Amazon.com. The AAW was not aware of this change. The Amazon coverage provided a different route for membership. In essence they used the Amazon.com website as a AAW membership access point, and for this service, an additional $10 was charged. EBSCO also does phone solicitations. The AAW Board has reviewed the situation and adopted the following policy:
- keep the EBSCO service for libraries and schools
- drop the Amazon.com portion of the contract
- request EBSCO to stop phone solicitations to individuals
After the devastation of hurricane Katrina was known, the AAW's Board of Directors put a fund raising and distribution program in place to benefit AAW members who have suffered significant losses due to this and future natural disasters. Click here to learn more...

The AAW is happy to announce a new main webmaster, Ed Davidson from Colorado Springs. Ed also maintains the Pikes Peak Woodturners' website. Jeff Jilg will continue as a co-webmaster, and will continue the implementation of a major website update which is scheduled for June 2006.
Linda Everett 3/04/06
On January 5th, 2006 Linda Everett (former board member) passed away after her courageous battle with cancer. Linda had served three years as an AAW board member from 2001 through 2004 as Treasurer and Chapters chairperson. She will be remembered fondly for her enthusiasm, energy and priceless expressions.
Linda was an Honorary Lifetime member of the Tidewater Turners of Virginia in Va. Beach. There she had served as president as well as being an active member for years. When asked if she turns, her response would be “No, but my husband Rueben does”!! Linda loved and collected smiley faces, and always willing to share her smile with us all.
In Loving Memory,
Your Friends
