Charlotte 2000 Instant Gallery
The Instant Gallery of the 2000 AAW Symposium was located in the Charlotte Convention Center in "Up Town" Charlotte, North Carolina. The gallery area was in one section of the large open concourse of the convention center.

The chapter collaborative challenge was also located in the area down one side of the gallery space. The symposium attendees had a large area to view one of the largest galleries ever.

Tacoma 1999 Instant Gallery-Top Floor
The Instant Gallery of the 1999 AAW Symposium was in the rotunda of the Tacoma Convention Center as well as on two other levels above the main floor. This allowed for a large area to display pieces although less room was actually available than previously. Viewers could spread out and not get in the way of other people as they strolled through the gallery on three levels. Risers were also put at the back of the single lines of tables to give a better view.

"If it weren't for the container, we would all be without a home.

As the means of transporting and storing food that took us from primitive hunter-gatherers to people living in communities, the container is central to our shared history....Open a refrigerator or cupboard in any kitchen and you'll find an international array of containers of all shapes and sizes." -- from opening comments by Kevin Wallace in Exhibition catalog

 2001 Nature Takes a Turn

Enter Exhibition of Woodturnings Inspired by Nature Where does one get ideas for woodturning? Works by other turners, architecture, commercial products, pottery, glass and basketry have been common sources. But there is a vast, often overlooked area to draw upon: the natural world. Forms from eggs, fruits, vegetables, seeds, seashells, and even the human torso and landscapes appear in the works of many fine turners. At times a very direct approach is expressed in leaf, flower, and tree forms that are a part of a turning. And a universe of patterns, textures, and colors can be tapped for treating turned surfaces.

The next AAW exhibition will try to capture some of this inspiration. The first opening of the show will be at the Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul, June 2 until August 12, 2001-only a few blocks from the AAW National Symposium to be held July 6-8, 2001. From there we hope to travel the show to several locations. Discussions are already underway for sites in California and New York.

The show will include invited and juried turners; no more than 20% will be invited. Jurying (from slides) will be by David Ellsworth and Sandy Blain next March. Accepted work will need to arrive in St. Paul by early April 2001. Applications for the show are at the back of the Fall American Woodturner and will also be in the Winter edition. Note: the source of your idea need not be obvious to the viewer, but should be conveyed to the jurors with text. -- Alan Lacer, Troy, Wisconsin

 1999 East Meets West
East Meets West: AAW hosted a joint Japanese and Western exhibition in conjunction with the Tacoma Symposium titled East Meets West. The show was located in the gallery area of the Tacoma Public Library near the conference site from June 16 until the end of July. From there the show traveled to Naruko, Japan as part of a national turning and lacquer ware conference.

The jurors will be Ray Ferguson of Melrose, Florida and Ruth and David Waterbury of Minneapolis, MN. Ferguson is a Professor Emeritus of Art Education from the University of Florida, a studio woodturner, and has been involved with the AAW from its inception. Ruth and David Waterbury are long-time collectors of woodturning and have one of the premier collections in the world. The jurying process followed strict guidelines to insure fairness and objectivity.

 2000 Chapter Collaborative Challenge
Glendale Woodturners Guild Charlotte 2000 Chapter Collaborative Challenge 1st place winner was the Glendale Woodturners Guild. (Photo by Larry Mart)

The Charlotte 2000 Chapter Collaborative Challenge was another wonderful display of chapter ingenuity. Each year the event is one of the most admired galleries during the symposium.
All the pieces were winners in that the appearance at the symposium meant that the chapter members had collaborated in the work building friendships and camradierie within their local chapter. The attendees of the Charlotte symposium were provided ballots to vote on their favorite pieces.

The result of the balloting was: Rules for the year 2000 Chapter Collaborative Challenge were published in the Fall Issue of American Woodturner.

1999 Chapter Collaborative Challenge

The word "collaborate" means to "to labor together", and twenty nine chapters of the AAW did that to produce some wonderful constructions. The Tacoma Sheraton was host to the best exhibit yet. This challenge .

Congratulations to the 1999 Chapter Challenge Winners!
