Chapter Contests - 2010

aaw
Each year, the AAW holds two contests: Best Chapter Newsletter and Best Chapter Website. The closing date for applications to our 2010 contests is April 1, 2010. Winners will be announced in mid-May on this webpage, and at the symposium banquet in Hartford. Rules and guidelines for the contests may be found here.

Best Local Chapter Newsletter Contest

Please send contest questions to the AAW office. Put "2010 Newsletter Contest question" in subject line of your email.

A) Contest submissions:

  • Local Chapters newsletter editors or a Chapter officer must submit their newsletters for the competition.
  • Chapters who wish to enter their newsletter in this year's competition must do so by email. Postal Service (snail-mail) entries will not be accepted.
  • To enter, send email to the AAW office.
  • Please put "Entry for 2010 Newsletter Contest" in the subject line of your email.
  • Include the following information with your email submission: Send a link only to your four best newsletters from the past year. Do not send any of the four newsletters themselves; the file sizes will overwhelm the judges' computers! Please include the issue dates, Local Chapter Name as well as the name and contact information for your editor in the email.
  • You will receive an email verification that the submission was received. If you do not receive the email verification, please re-send your initial email or send a query to the AAW office.

B) Evaluation Process

Three Chapters will be chosen as winners (first, second, third) based on ranking from the judging criteria listed below. The judges for the newsletter contest will be two AAW Board members, as well as winning editors from past newsletter contests. The 2009 newsletter winners were Montgomery County Woodturners, Chicago Woodturners, and Greater Vancouver Woodturners. Read their newsletters to get a general idea of what it takes to put together an excellent newsletter.

C) Eligibility

  • Newsletters must be published between March 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010
  • The Chapter must be registered as an AAW Chapter with the St Paul office
  • Email submissions must be made by April 1, 2010

D) Prizes

  • Winners will be announced by mid May, 2010.
  • Announcements will be made through:
    - the AAW website and forum
    - the American Woodturner
    - and recognized at the 2010 Symposium
  • Winning Chapters will receive a plaque commemorating their achievement.

E) Judges will be looking for:

  • Visually appealing layout
  • Content that is current
  • Content that pertains to woodturning
  • Content that contributes to AAW's mission statement
  • Useful woodturning and news-related information
  • Sound writing skills

Above all, newsletters should be fun to read and provide useful information to members of the chapter they serve.

Best Local Chapter Website Contest

  • If your Chapter's site has security access features, please include a temporary password for the judge's use.
  • You will receive an email verification that the submission was received. If you do not receive the email verification, please re-send your initial email or send a query to the webmaster.
