Videographers - AAW 2017 Annual International Symposium

The AAW seeks videographers for its 31th Annual International Symposium in Kansas City, Missouri,  June 22-25, 2017. Applicants should have experience with video camera equipment, possess technical competence, and be able to make decisions regarding lighting, shooting angle, placement of microphone, etc. Videographers selected for six rotations and to assist with set-up or tear-down will receive a free symposium registration. Students/Educators: AAW's 3rd Annual Turning to the Future Competition

The AAW is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Turning to the Future competition, an opportunity for woodturning students and schools to show off what they can do. The competition is intended to encourage and support students and instructors in reaching for and attaining the highest levels of skill in the use of the lathe. The contest is open to students in North America. There are two divisions, High School and Post-Secondary, with three categories each: Functional, Small Turnings, and Open. Five finalists in each division category will be chosen to have their work displayed at the 2017 AWFS®Fair in Las Vegas, Nevada. Work will be evaluated on craftsmanship, aesthetic appeal, creativity and/or utility, and process documentation. There is no entry fee. Application period opens March 10, 2017. Volunteer Trade Show Demonstrators

The WIT committee is looking for volunteers to help attract new women to woodturning and encourage women turners. To increase women's presence at AAW's 2017 Symposium in Kansas City, WIT is looking for volunteers to demonstrate in the Trade Show. We are compiling a list of women demonstrators and will make it available to vendors. If vendors want someone to demonstrate their tools and don't currently have demonstrators, they can ask women on the list. Click here to apply.

Minnesota Woodworker's Guild

The Minnesota Woodworkers Guild invites woodworkers and artists to present their work to the public at the Northern Woods Exhibition, Eden Prairie Center, Eden Prairie, MN, April 20-23, 2017. The Northern Woods Exhibition draws people from all over the region to the Eden Prairie Center. In 2016, 114,942 visited the Center. Judges will award over $3,000 in cash prizes for Best Turning and 10 additional categories. Theme is northern woods. More information: (612)559-6179 http://www.mnwwg.org/nwds.html. Fresh Wood Student Woodworking Competition

The Fresh Wood student woodworking competition will be showcased at the 2017 AWFS®Fair, July 19-22, 2016, in Las Vegas. It is open to high school and post-secondary students in accredited woodworking or related programs. The 2017 Special Theme category topic will be “Lighting." Five other entry categories round out the Fresh Wood competition: Case Goods, Seating, Tables, Design for Production, and Open. Entries will be rated by a panel of judges that represent different aspects of the industry. The Fresh Wood competition will once again be hosted alongside the American Association of Woodturner’s Turning to the Future competition, showcasing turned student work. Woodworkers Showcase at Chestertown RiverArts

Established and emerging woodworking artists are invited to enter their original creations in wood – made by carving, turning, or any other woodworking technique. The curators seek to display a wide variety of articles and styles representing the best in woodworking craftsmanship and design. Entries will be judged with modest cash prizes awarded. Elizabeth R. Raphael Founder’s Prize Exhibition, Contemporary Craft

The 2017 Elizabeth R. Raphael Founder’s Prize competition is open to all artists working in found materials. Emerging artists are especially encouraged to apply. In celebration of its 25th anniversary in 1997, Contemporary Craft established a $5,000 prize for excellence in the field of contemporary craft. This biennial award, which is given in conjunction with a catalogue, video profile and juried exhibition, is funded by the daughters of Elizabeth R. Raphael, the founder of Contemporary Craft and a nationally known figure in the contemporary art scene for many decades. Prizes are selected by medium. Cost: $45.
